In this new ballet for young audiences, leading choreographer William Tuckett conjures magic and mystery, with sound taking centre stage. William Tuckett is one of the most versatile choreographers of his generation. The British maker creates for leading ballet companies worldwide and has also built an impressive career as a director and choreographer in the West End, as well as in opera, theatre, film and television. His work includes numerous award winning productions for young audiences. Since bringing imagination and colour into the lives of children and teenagers is one of his greatest passions. The art of sound Now he creates his first work for Dutch National Ballet: Sounds About Right (̒‘Ik hoor, ik hoor wat jij niet ziet’). In this intimate production, a dancer tries to hold her ground in a world of sound that becomes increasingly unpredictable. Can she still trust her own senses? Or is someone else pulling the strings? And if nothing is as it should be, what does the world sound like then? Tuckett collaborates with a foley artist, a performer who recreates lifelike sound effects live on stage using unexpected objects. With two halves of a coconut, a horse bursts into gallop. Frying bacon becomes heavy rain. A squeeze of a bag of cornflour evokes the crisp crunch of fresh snow. For all ages The magical, disorientating effect created by the foley artist is heightened further through the choreography. While humour, joy and wonder are at the heart of Tuckett’s work, there is always a deeper, reflective layer.
