93 With two world premieres and a ballet seen live with us for the first time, Metamorphosis brings together the powerful, distinctive dance languages of three generations of choreographers. Connection forms the unifying thread throughout the evening. Following the great success of Wings of Wax, Dutch National Ballet adds another masterpiece by Jiří Kylián to its repertoire: Forgotten Land. Inspired by Benjamin Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem, Kylián drew on the elemental force of the sea, which gives life and takes it away. The twelve dancers move like a close knit community, locked in a struggle with nature, as grief and anger gradually give way to acceptance and hope. Awe-inspiring Hope also lies at the heart of David Dawson’s METAMORPHOSIS, set to Philip Glass’ piano composition of the same name. Dawson created much of the ballet via Zoom during the pandemic. At the time, it could only be experienced through livestream. Now, in a newly adapted version, it receives its first live performance with Dutch National Ballet. Guided by the belief that transformation ultimately leads to growth, Dawson sought to let his dancers experience the strength of togetherness and resilience. The result is a lyrical, intensely physical and awe-inspiring work. A new voice Representing the youngest generation in this programme is South African choreographer Mthuthuzeli November, with a brand new creation. Blending ballet with African dance and contemporary influences, he brings a distinctive and compelling new voice. That’s why his work is now in high demand internationally. Spirituality, connection and the building of new communities drive his pieces, not only as themes on stage, but also in the deeply personal way he collaborates with his dancers. “ METAMORPHOSIS is a magical ballet (…) It is timeless but every carefully chosen detail speaks of the here and now” SeeingDance Triple bill Forgotten Land Dutch National Ballet premiere Choreography Jiří Kylián Music Benjamin Britten Set and costume design John F.
