83 Awarded the Prix Benois de la Danse (the ‘Oscar of dance’) and acclaimed from New York to Hong Kong, Christopher Wheeldon’s sparkling, cinematic adaptation of the Cinderella fairy tale is an adventure for the whole family. Christopher Wheeldon, one of the most sought-after choreographers in the world, created a modern version of the popular fairy tale Cinderella, especially for Dutch National Ballet, in 2012. Thanks to his boundless imagination, virtuosic choreography and fresh visual world, the production has since travelled the globe. Now we bring it back, with a new generation of dancers and for a new generation of audiences. Wheeldon’s Cinderella is the perfect first encounter with ballet. No helpless drudge Equally at home in ballet and musical theatre, Wheeldon is a master storyteller. For Cinderella, he drew on the Brothers Grimm version of the tale (which he describes as more poetic than other retellings), as well as on the richness and emotional depth of Sergei Prokofiev’s score. However he also added a distinct perspective of his own. His Cinderella is no pitiful, lonely drudge, but a selfassured young woman who carries her fate with quiet strength. And his Prince is flesh and blood too. For the first time, and with a playful nod to Prince William and the former Prince (now King) Willem-Alexander, he is given a name: Guillaume. Breathtaking scenes Alongside the sparkling choreography, the design plays a vital role in Cinderella’s international success. Renowned designer Julian Crouch created the enchanting sets and lavish costumes, blending Victorian elegance with contemporary catwalk flair. Meanwhile, the inventive puppeteer and designer Basil Twist adds an extra touch of magic with his breathtaking tree and carriage scenes. “ A vibrant piece of theatre (…) bright and lyrical, elegant and humorous” The Times Holiday season production Choreography Christopher Wheeldon Libretto Christopher Wheeldon and Craig Lucas Music Sergei Prokofiev Set, masks and costume design Julian Crouch Stage direction and tree and carriage design Basil Twist Lighting design Natasha Katz Video design Daniel Brodie Musical accompaniment Dutch Ballet Orchestra conducted by Koen Kessels Co-production with the San Francisco Ballet Performances for schools We offer special performances for primary school students.
