60 Choreographer/director Nanine Linning and tenor John Osborn on La damnation de Faust With La damnation de Faust, Nanine Linning sets out to bring Berlioz’s expressive music into close dialogue with her highly physical approach to staging. Tenor John Osborn will sing the title role, bringing to life Faust’s obsessive inner world. The strength of Nanine Linning, artistic director of Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, lies in her ability to combine genres and disciplines. She creates dance performances, installations, opera productions and films, with the body always at the centre. “What dancers and singers share is the breath. Movement can’t exist without breath, and neither can singing. The instrument is the same, only the form of expression is different: for the singer, breath becomes sound; for the dancer, breath becomes movement. Because of my background as a choreographer, I work very strongly from the physical side, whereas many other directors may start with the psychology.
