Dutch National Opera, Opera Zuid and Het Geluid present a community opera about the climate crisis, seen through the eyes of a new generation. Lola discovers that ancient rainforests are being felled on a massive scale and decides to stop going to school in protest. Her parents and classmates make fun of her decision, but she finds a group of like-minded people online. Backed by that community, she ultimately sparks a global movement and becomes its figurehead. Lola’s mother is fiercely opposed to her daughter. Along with her company, she takes on a contract to build a motorway through a rainforest. With so much at stake, can Lola and her mother risk being genuinely open with one another? How can you even keep speaking to each other when your worldviews are so fundamentally different? Jonathan Dove Composer Jonathan Dove has been bringing professionals and amateurs together in his work for decades. In productions such as Tobias and the Angel and The Monster in the Maze, people of different backgrounds and ages share stories worth telling. The award-winning Uprising may be his most urgent community opera to date. For this production, two local project choirs will be formed in Amsterdam and Maastricht, consisting of teenagers and adults, with and without stage experience. Musical direction is by Manoj Kamps, who led The Shell Trial in 2024, in which a participatory choir also played a central role.
