54 Opera Dutch National Opera Studio sings Impressions de Pelléas Claude Debussy (1862–1918) and Marius Constant (1925–2004) The singers of Dutch National Opera Studio present a compact version of Debussy’s groundbreaking Pelléas et Mélisande, one of the most original and intriguing operas of the twentieth century. In 1892, the author Maurice Maeterlinck published his play Pelléas et Mélisande about two half-brothers who fall in love with the same enigmatic woman. The story feels like a fairy tale that galvanises the imagination without ever allowing itself to be fully understood. It inspired Debussy to write an innovative composition that still enchants audiences today. Chamber opera Composer and conductor Marius Constant captured the spirit of this masterpiece in his abridged version for two pianos and six soloists (1992). It is a fitting piece for the annual Dutch National Opera Studio tour: grand repertoire in chamber opera format, with all the intensity of the original work. The production is being produced by Nederlandse Reisopera, in collaboration with Dutch National Opera and Opera Zuid. The musical direction is in the hands of the young, multi-talented Benjamin Perry Wenzelberg, who also plays one of the piano parts. Joe Hill-Gibbins, known for his austere and physical theatrical language, directs the singers in this mysterious musical tale. Dutch National Opera Studio is a two-year programme, led by renowned soprano Rosemary Joshua, that prepares young singers and répétiteurs for an international opera career.
