44 Interview Barrie Kosky: “There are many contemporary composers who write fascinating music, but not that many who truly understand theatre. Du Yun is one of them. When I began listening to her work, I was immediately struck. Almost every piece sounded different. She draws on folk traditions, contemporary classical music, rock and punk. She sings herself and writes for orchestras and ensembles. When we finally met, the connection was immediate. The collaboration began with a shared curiosity and a long conversation about opera, theatre and life.” Du Yun: “Often, when well-known directors reach out, they already have a concept and are looking for a composer to ‘fill in’ the music. But when we spoke, my concerns disappeared. I could feel that Barrie had a deep respect for the composer’s perspective.
