New Moves: 22 and 23 May 2027 For this choreographic workshop, the dancers of Dutch National Ballet create new works, performed by the dancers with whom they normally share the stage. Partners Junior Company Wellbeing first This vision also underpins Powney’s leadership of the Junior Company. “I want to support the dancers not only in their technical development, but also in their growth as individuals, both artistically and emotionally. Along with them and the rest of the team, I hope to go even further in creating a safe and nurturing environment, which prepares the dancers for the professional world. These young people are extremely talented and the fact that they’ve been accepted for a leading com- pany is a real achievement in itself, but it also puts them under a lot of pressure. I think people sometimes underestimate how difficult that can be at their age.” For Powney, the dancers’ wellbeing always comes first. “Of course they have to perform at the highest level as dancers – that’s expected of them in a professional company – but it’s equally important that they feel well and supported. Only then can they contribute fully to the group and to the future of the art form.” New repertoire As artistic director, Powney will also play a part in shaping the repertoire of the Junior Company. “We celebrate Dutch dance, of course, but the programming also provides a wonderful platform for new choreographers. In addition, I hope to continue the tradition of engaging international choreographers.
