After the death of their mother, Paul and Lise retreat to an apartment in Paris, where their mutual banter degenerates into a sinister power play. When Paul and Lise start to involve outsiders in their intrigues, they sense their stormy relationship is about to collapse. Little by little, brother and sister drive each other towards a tragic denouement. Haunting and poetic Philip Glass based his 1996 chamber opera on the novel of the same name by Jean Cocteau. The characters are all on the verge of adulthood, so who better to perform them than the young talents of the Dutch National Opera Studio? The hypnotic piano accompaniment enhances the intimate feel of this opera, which manages to be both haunting and poetic. Director Béatrice Lachaussée has previously staged the family production A Song for the Moon at Dutch National Opera and La voix humaine and L’heure espagnole at Opera Zuid. Her refined style and musical sensitivity make her the ideal stage director for this modern classic, which will be presented for the first time at Dutch National Opera. Collaboration between Dutch opera companies Les enfants terribles is being produced by Opera Zuid, in close collaboration with Dutch National Opera and Nederlandse Reisopera. Each year, these opera companies join forces for a production featuring the singers of the Dutch National Opera Studio, to be performed at venues around the Netherlands. The Dutch National Opera Studio is a two-year programme designed to prepare young singers and répétiteurs for an international opera career. The programme is led by the internationally renowned soprano Rosemary Joshua.
