But Isolde would rather die and prepares a lethal potion that she wants to share with Tristan. However, the cup turns out to contain a love potion. Even before they set foot on dry land, Tristan and Isolde’s fates are intertwined forever — they are trapped in an all-consuming passion that can only be fulfilled in an ecstatic death. Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde gives an unprecedented musical expression to desire. With endless melodies and dissonances that constantly seem on the verge of resolving, Wagner sweeps listeners up in a musical whirlwind of desire that ends with Isolde’s famous ‘Liebestod’. In his acclaimed production, Pierre Audi has created abstract, dramatic images that allow the music to take over and emphasise the transcendental power of love. Rising star takes on Wagner’s masterpiece It was Wagner’s music that first sparked Tarmo Peltokoski’s interest in becoming a conductor. Despite his youth – he was born in 2000 – his résumé already includes several celebrated Wagner performances. His interpretation of Tristan und Isolde with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, where he is the principal guest conductor, promises to be a unique musical experience. Vocally, Tristan and Isolde are considered to be among the most demanding roles in the operatic repertoire. Soprano Malin Byström, who has been praised for her interpretations of Salome, Tosca and Elsa (Lohengrin) in Amsterdam, makes her role debut as Isolde. The part of her lover will be performed by tenor Michael Weinius, who has previously sung this role to great acclaim in Paris, Zurich and Berlin. A musical whirlwind of desire In Tristan und Isolde, Richard Wagner masterfully conveys the overwhelming yearning of the lovers through his music. The young star conductor Tarmo Peltokoski will be leading the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra through the enthralling score, in a revival of Pierre Audi’s acclaimed production, offering an abstract, timeless interpretation of this love story. “ This perspicuous staging has lingering, austere beauty” Bachtrack The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra performs on the most prestigious venues in the Netherlands and abroad, with Concertgebouw de Doelen as its home base. Led by renowned principal conductors such as Edo de Waart, James Conlon, Valery Gergiev, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Lahav Shani, the orchestra has acquired a place among Europe’s most prominent orchestras. Tarmo Peltokoski made an overwhelming impression in his debut concert with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in 2022 and was appointed principal guest conductor not long afterwards. 41
