Nationale Opera & Ballet

New Perspectives Studio Boekman provides a space for new stories, and for stories that have been around for a long time but have not had the attention they deserve. New voices offer perspectives that, for some, will be the mirror they have long been missing, while for others they will be a window into a completely new world. We partner with artistic teams and creatives from other disciplines, such as design, fashion, the virtual arts and the fine arts, to generate a multi-faceted programme. Next Generation In Studio Boekman, the new generation of makers and audiences will explore the opera and ballet of the future. After all, they are the ones who will be creating and deciding what is to become of these art forms! Young artists will get every opportunity at Studio Boekman to discover their own voice and develop further, and young audiences will see their own interests and experiences reflected in the (youth) performances. Digital Culture Digital culture is gaining in importance and increasingly determining how we see the world around us. But what does this digital revolution mean for the future of opera and ballet? In Studio Boekman, we experiment with the possibilities of digital technologies such as VR, AI, AR and 4D sound for makers, performers and audiences. Studio Boekman Studio Boekman’s diverse programme ranges from playful youth performances and enriching contextual programmes to ballets in a club-like setting. There’s truly something for everyone, and all at more affordable ticket prices. This makes Studio Boekman a place where everyone can feel right at home. When German troops occupied the Netherlands in 1940, he and his wife chose suicide to escape the threat of the nazi regime, which would undoubtedly have targeted him as a Jew and leading social democrat. Naming the theatre after Emanuel Boekman is also a way of acknowledging the Jewish heritage of the site on which our building stands: for centuries up until the Second World War, this district was a vibrant Jewish quarter.
