Maar Collins zegt niets over zijn zijdelingse betrokkenheid bij de studie.14 Natuurlijk levert ook Anthony Fauci een bijdrage, als hem tijdens een persconferentie van het Witte Huis op 17 april 2020 gevraagd wordt of hij in kan gaan op de suggesties en zorgen van mensen dat het virus op een of andere manier door mensen is gemaakt, en mogelijk ontsnapt is uit een laboratorium in China. Dat kan Fauci wel: “There was a study recently that we can make available to you, where a group of highly qualified evolutionary virologists looked at the sequences there and the sequences in bats as they evolve. And the mutations that it took to get to the point where it is now is totally consistent with a jump of a species from an animal to a human.”15 16 En ook Fauci zegt niets over zijn rol bij het tot stand komen van de publicatie en wat eraan vooraf ging. Daarna doet hij er in een interview met de National Geographic nog een schepje bovenop: “If you look at the evolution of the virus in bats and what’s out there now, the scientific evidence is very, very strongly leaning toward this could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated [...] Everything about the stepwise evolution over time strongly indicates that [this virus] evolved in nature and then jumped species.”17 En nee, Fauci overweegt geen andere opties, zoals het scenario dat het virus in de natuur werd aangetroffen, naar het lab werd gebracht en vervolgens ontsnapte, want volgens Fauci wijst het wetenschappelijk bewijs niet in die richting. Met andere woorden: de grillen van Moeder Natuur volstaan om de evolutie van SARS-CoV-2 te verklaren.
