20 years HAN BioCentre

25 WHAT DO (FORMER) STUDENTS SAY In 20 years, hundreds of students have done their internship or graduation projects for BSc, mbo and MSc education at HAN BioCentre. Some of their experiences: • Tom Nout – BSc student in 2023, now working as technician at AlgaePARC ‘I look back on my time at the biocentre as a pleasant and educational experience. I especially learned how to work independently on a project as a professional, but also how to present and discuss results in a group setting.’ • Anne Selten – BSc student in 2021, now working as technician and Technisch Onderwijs Assistent at HAN BioCentre ‘My internship at HAN BioCentre made me realize that working on waste streams is both fascinating and full of endless possibilities and technical challenges.’ • Jack van Dijk – BSc student in 2016, now teacher Chemistry at HAN ‘I have learned a lot about looking at the world and how to apply chemistry to that. I have learned more about biology then I thought I would. For example working sterile! As a chemist, that is not something you often do. As well as that ELISA is more than a girls name.’ • Walaà Jamous -BSc student in 2024 ‘On my time at the biocentre I look back with great appreciation. It was a very enjoyable period and a highly educational experience. My internship provided me with valuable insights and skills for which I am truly grateful. One of the key developments was improving my English. Throughout the internship, I became increasingly familiar with the English terminology used in my project, which helped me explain my work more confidently and effectively.’ • Chiel van Amstel – BSc student in 2022, now MSc student at WUR ‘I’ve learned a lot about fermentation, but especially a lot of lab skills related to experimental setup, chemical analysis, and planning. It was a challenge to build up 8 bioreactors, but we managed with help of Bram (Visscher, red.), and flexibi- lity of the entire team. I’ll also never forget how long the sample prep for the GC took, but thankfully, the chemistry team was always willing to help me when needed.’ • Cléo Snelders – mbo student in 2021, now BSc student at HAN ‘During my time at the biocentre, I learned a lot, but perhaps the most important thing is that it’s okay to make mistakes. As long as you’re honest about it and learn from it, it’s simply part of the job. Everyone makes mistakes, regardless of your position or experience. And what struck me: there’s always someone willing to help you if you get stuck. The open and supportive atmosphere has meant a lot to me.’ • Bram Visscher - BSc student in 2015 and Msc student in 2021-2023, now working as researcher fermentation technology, lab manager of HAN BioCentre and lecturer in Upstream Processing ‘From learning as a student to educating students at HAN BioCentre. Great to be part of this team!’ DID YOU KNOW THAT HAN BIOCENTRE HAS SET UP 3 MINOR PROGRAMS? - Minor Biobased Innovations - Minor Data Science - Minor Drug Discovery In these minors students are brought in contact with research projects from practice by using case studies from research group projects. Over the years, more than 250 students have followed one of these minors.
